One feature is that these numbers like “1.4 billion years ago” or “1.2 billion years ago” are not delimited by boundary events such as the appearance or extinction of organisms, but by pre-determined numerical ages (GSSA: Global Standard Stratigraphic Age, not GSSP).

Before this era was the “Calymmian Period,” and after it follows the “Stenian Period.”
